Yes/No Question

The same methods as Negation.
The Basic Approach here is,

  1. If the verb group has more than 1 element, kick the first element to the front of the sentence: Modals or HAVE as helping verb
  2. If the verb group has only 1 element, but it is BE, kick the first element to the front of the sentence.
  3. For the rest, we break up the single verb into DO+ infinitive.

Modals

The verb group has more than 1 element: kick the modal (the first element of the verb group ) to the front of the sentence.
e.g. She can go. ==> Can she go?
It may rain. ==> May it rain?
You should study at least 3 hours. ==> Should I study at least 3 hours?

HAVE as helping verb

The verb group has more than 1 element: kick the HAVE (the first element of the verb group ) to the front of the sentence.
e.g. He has played well. ==> Has he played well?
We have been chatting on Facebook. ==> Have you been chatting on Facebook?

BE

If the verb group has only 1 element, but it is BE, kick the first element to the front of the sentence.
e.g. He is a doctor. ==> Is he a doctor?
They are winning. ==> Are they winning?

Split by DO+ infinitive

For the rest, we break up the single verb into DO+ infinitive.
e.g. She plays = DOES + she play + ?
They play = DO + they play + ?
Jane played = DID + Jane play + ?
